MUSH-ROOM is an ongoing dialogue between artists, participants, and the space itself.

We create situations that unsettle the ordinary and open new ways of seeing; moments where process matters more than polish, and transformation emerges through trust, collaboration and participation.

MUSH-ROOM values closeness, honesty, and connection as radical gestures. We invite you to step in fully, to explore, to listen, and to take part in what unfolds between us.

BELOW CONTROL

LEONIE FERNHOUT & THOMAS MEIJERMAN

OPENING — 8 NOVEMBER:

16:00 – 16:30: Walk-in
16:30 – 17:00: Welcome toast
17:00: Opening the exhibition

Please RSVP for the opening via this link.

After the opening, BELOW CONTROL is open on Saturdays and Sundays during November, from 13:00 until 17:00.

BELOW CONTROL invites a descent into a space where the pace of everyday life falls away, opening to a quieter rhythm. The exhibition explores surrender not as passivity but as an act of radical connection: to our body, emotions, and the uncertain world we share. We invite you to slow down and feel the tension between surrender and control.

The updated installation RESONANCE IN REBELLION by Jolique Geurts and Tipp Bongers is presented alongside this exhibition.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

LEONIE FERNHOUT explores what it means to be human, tracing the interplay between our inner and outer worlds. Her work centers on vulnerability, our physical connection to nature, and the quiet power that emerges when we face our own stories. Beginning with photography and drawing, her practice has evolved into the sculptural realm through ceramics. The slow, responsive nature of clay invites stillness and attentiveness, echoing her ongoing exploration of connection; between body and mind, human and nature, form and feeling.

THOMAS MEIJERMAN explores the shifting role of humans within the ecosystems of landscapes. His work draws from geological and evolutionary processes, transforming observation and intervention into a dialogue with nature. Through fieldwork, installations, and material experimentation, he examines how natural forces; erosion, compression, crystallization, echo human gestures of control and release. Each project becomes a living exchange between artist and environment, where change itself is the medium.

BELOW CONTROL is supported by CBK Rotterdam, Stichting Bekker la-Bastide fonds and Iona stichting.

In the heart of Rotterdam’s hidden spaces, MUSH-ROOM debuts:
RESONANCE IN REBELLION featuring Jolique Geurts

Jolique Geurts transforms the entire room — walls, ceiling, and floor — into a vibrant canvas. The installation becomes a dynamic narrative, exploring the tension between order and chaos, creation and destruction.

We invite you to enter and become part of this narrative. Step into the space, experience the artwork, and physically engage with it by framing and cutting a piece of the canvas directly from the wall.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jolique Geurts, a KABK Fine Arts graduate, channels her anarchist spirit through raw, expressive art that defies conformity. Her work is a chaotic, emotional symphony that dismantles societal boundaries, embodying both a caring soul and a bold, unapologetic voice. Her art is not just seen but deeply felt.

FUNDRAISER

CUT OUT YOUR OWN PIECE OF CANVAS

RESONANCE IN REBELLION
JOLIQUE GEURTS

Support our debut event with artist Jolique Geurts through our crowdfunding campaign, where you can purchase a piece of her painted canvas in one of six sizes.

At the event opening, attendees will cut their purchased canvas piece directly from the immersive installation, becoming active participants in the evolving artwork. Their interactions shape the space, turning spectators into contributors.

As the event progresses, the canvas transforms into a tapestry of individual pieces, symbolizing the audience's role in the creative process. What remains is a new, collaborative artwork—a testament to the power of collective creation.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT WILL COVER

MUSH-ROOM is utilizing crowdfunding to cover the expenses for our project. By supporting our debut event, you’re not just backing a single initiative; you’re nurturing a sustainable cycle of creative growth within the MUSH-ROOM Collective. Each project builds on the success of the last, fostering an ongoing evolution of artistic expression.
